Macrocarpa Outdoor Dining Table and Chairs Set NZ: Which Size Fits Your Family?
If you’re searching for a macrocarpa outdoor dining table and chairs set in NZ, you’re probably picturing long summer evenings with the whole family around one solid timber table – not a plastic setting that fades and cracks after two seasons. A dining set is a bigger investment than a single bench, so it pays to know your sizing options, what the timber actually does outdoors, and what production and delivery look like before you order.
Macrocarpa Outdoor Dining Table and Chairs Set NZ: What You Get
Every River Rustics table and chairs set is built from solid, locally sourced macrocarpa – not a veneer or a treated pine frame. Each set is reinforced with stainless screws, bolts and glue, and finished with a quality outdoor oil stain over timber that’s rough sawn then sanded smooth. Because the wood keeps its natural character, you’ll see knots and grain variation in every piece, and it’s normal for some surface cracking to appear over time – that’s cosmetic and doesn’t affect strength or durability.
Family Set vs Pohutukawa Edition: Which Size Fits Your Space
We build two solid macrocarpa dining sets, and the right one comes down to how many people you’re regularly seating:
- Rustic Table & Chairs: Family Set – our extra-large option, seating eight on solid rustic arm chairs. Table dimensions run 3000mm (L) x 900mm or 1100mm (W) x 750mm (H), ideal for a big deck, lifestyle block or a family that regularly hosts.
- Rustic Table & Chairs: Pohutukawa Edition – a more compact six-seater at 2100mm (L) x 1100mm (W) x 750mm (H), a better fit for an average NZ courtyard or patio without crowding it out.
Both come with matching solid rustic arm chairs rather than bench seats, which most families find easier for guests to get in and out of. Estimated production time on either set is 4–6 weeks from order, not including shipping – worth factoring in if you’re planning around Christmas or a specific event.
Why Solid Macrocarpa Beats Treated Pine for an Outdoor Dining Set
Macrocarpa is naturally rot and insect resistant, so it doesn’t need the chemical treatment that pine relies on to survive outside. Left untreated it weathers to a silver-grey; with an oil finish (like ours) it holds its warmer tone for longer. For a dining set that’s going to sit out through Nelson/Tasman’s UV and wet winters, or wherever you are in NZ, that natural durability matters more on a big table than on almost any other piece – it’s the surface your family actually uses every day.
Handmade in Nelson/Tasman, Continuing What Dad Started
River Rustics is still a small, family-owned operation. Dad, Glenn Henderson, founded it in Northland back in 2009, and after he passed away in 2020 I carried on building the furniture he taught me, now from our workshop in the Tasman region. Every dining set is made to order rather than pulled off a shelf, so if you need a slightly different length to fit a specific deck or alcove, get in touch before ordering and we’ll see what’s possible.
Caring for Your Outdoor Dining Set
Macrocarpa needs far less upkeep than treated pine, but a table that sees plates, spills and sun deserves a bit of seasonal attention. We’ve put together a full seasonal macrocarpa care guide covering cleaning, oiling and what to avoid – worth a read once your set arrives so it looks good for years, not just the first summer.
